Community Action Blaby District held a Community Cultural Festival on 17th February 2010.

festival1The event at Brockington College in Enderby, was a huge success, with around 450 people coming from all round the district to enjoy themselves.

The cultural festival was opened by Councillor Alan Bailey from Blaby District Council, and began with a Chinese Lion dance, to help celebrate the Chinese New Year. This was then followed by a wide variety of cultural performances such as Afro-Caribbean drumming, Indian dancing, Chinese dancing, a Buddhist chant display and a Barbershop quartet. In addition to these, there were many other stands, promoting other cultures such as Gypsy & Travellers, French, Japanese and American.

festival2A host of local organisations also had stalls including Blaby Active Together to do health checks, Street Pastors were on hand to explain their work in the District, 4ward Strokes was eager to reach out to minorities of working age that have suffered stroke, the Library highlighted their services and specifically the manga café in Enderby, vInvolve was promoting youth volunteering, and Adult Education was on hand with information on ESOL courses.

The success of the evening was that everyone who came along was willing to take part in all the activities, despite gender, race or cultural back ground. It was great to see everyone ‘let their hair down’ and have fun.

festival4The feedback received from the Cultural festival was very positive, with 88% of people wanting to see more cultural events around the District. We shall be planning a similar event next February. If you would like to be involved in organising the next Cultural Festival or would just like to take part, please contact Community Action Blaby District on 0116 2727669 or email community@cabd.org.uk
